Step 1. Prep the Pan and Oven
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
Step 2. Mash the Bananas
- Mash bananas in a bowl until mostly smooth with a few small lumps.
Step 3. Mix the Wet Ingredients
- In a large bowl, whisk melted butter, peanut butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla and mix until combined.
Step 4. Add the Bananas
- Stir mashed bananas into the wet mixture until evenly incorporated.
Step 5. Combine Dry Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt.
Step 6. Build the Batter
- Add dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir just until combined. Do not overmix.
Step 7. Fold in Mix-Ins
- Gently fold in chocolate chips and nuts if using.
Step 8. Bake
- Spread batter evenly in the pan. Bake for 28–32 minutes until the center is set and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
Step 9. Cool and Slice
- Cool completely before lifting out and slicing into bars.
